Expedition 36 Russian Spacewalk Prepares Way for New ISS Module

Outside the International Space Station, Expedition 36 Flight Engineers Fyodor Yurchikhin and Alexander Misurkin of the Russian Federal Space Agency conducted a spacewalk in Russian Orlan spacesuits on Aug. 16 to install a panel of experiments on the Poisk module of the Russian segment of the complex and to install cables in advance of the launch of a new Russian laboratory module to the orbital outpost. It was the 172nd spacewalk in support of space station assembly and maintenance, the seventh in Yurchikhin’s career and the second for Misurkin. The two cosmonauts, who performed a spacewalk together in June, will venture outside the Pirs Docking Compartment airlock again on Aug. 22 to install a platform for the future mounting of an optical telescope and to remove an experimental laser-based communications system.
