Orion Rocket Erected at Launch Pad

On Sept. 30, the United Launch Alliance’s Delta IV Heavy rocket for NASA’s upcoming Exploration Flight Test-1 (EFT-1) Orion mission rolled out of the Horizontal Integration Facility at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station for the half hour move to Space Launch Complex 37. First motion was at 9:50 p.m. The following morning, Oct. 1, the Delta IV was raised to the vertical position on the launch pad.

The launch vehicle now begins a series of electrical and mechanical tests. There then will be a flight program verification test of all the flight events that will take place aboard the rocket after liftoff. Finally, a wet dress rehearsal will fully fuel the launch vehicle as part of a countdown demonstration test for launch. Upon its successful conclusion, the Delta IV Heavy will await the arrival of the Orion spacecraft in mid-November.
